PTSD and Trauma

Many occurrences can be traumatic.

Something happened that changed your life.

If you ever felt endangered, feared for your life, or witnessed or lived a traumatic event, those experiences can have a lasting effect both mentally and physically.

War, loss, assaults, abuse, medical problems, and accidents are traumatic events that can stay with you long after the event occurred.

PTSD is a consequence of trauma.

Trauma can cause PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), resulting in triggers to make you relive the past traumatic experience. With PTSD, you can always feel on edge, making it difficult to trust people, sometimes even yourself. Joy seems so far away, and life sometimes feels like a fog.

The world isn’t what it used to be anymore, and at times, you might feel disconnected from your body. Feelings of sadness, guilt, shame, helplessness, anger, and confusion start taking over. Then come the intrusive thoughts and memories.

Keeping your cool is hard because sleep is almost nonexistent, and those dreams aren’t pleasant.

Dealing with PTSD is a lonely feeling.

However, please know that PTSD is a standard, regular, and often adaptive response to experiencing a traumatic or stressful event.

In fact, according to PTSD.gov (2017), approximately 7 out of 10 Americans have experienced at least one traumatic event in their lives.

Unfortunately, the number is higher in the military and first responders’ community, but those with PTSD do not always seek treatment.
